How to Choose a Web Host with SEO in Mind

February 27th, 2012 by

choose web hosting provider

This post continues the series of posts on our blog that are dedicated to starting a website from scratch. To catch up, please, read How to Choose a Domain Name with SEO in Mind. Part 1: Brand vs Keywords and How to Choose a Domain Name with SEO in Mind. Part 2. Domain Extension.

So, once you have chosen a domain name for your would-be website, the next step is to pick a Web hosting provider. You can easily compare different offers available by checking out provider ratings and comparison charts - here is an example.

In this article we are going to discuss what to look for in a Web host, bearing in mind that you'd also like your website to be visible in the search engines one day. So, here are some important things to consider:

Server location

The first thing to consider is the country in which the host is located. For SEO purposes, it's better if it is in the same country you're targeting. Google reportedly considers websites more relevant for a particular location if they are also hosted there. Read the rest of this entry »

Huge AdWords Costs? Get down to Negative Keywords!

February 22nd, 2012 by

negative keywordsDo you think traffic can be bad? Not only can it be bad, it can also leave you penniless when running pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns. Unless you work out a plan for managing negative keywords. In this post, I'll discuss why we need negative keywords, how to identify them and use across your Google AdWords campaigns to get more relevant traffic and cut PPC spending.

Why do you need to say "no"?

Three years ago I helped one of my customers save quite a fortune on adding just one negative keyword to his ad campaigns in Google AdWords. Any guesses for the word? It was download. Imagine a company that provides software development services to independent vendors. There was NO software for download at their website, but their ads were showing for such keywords as

software development tutorial download
download flash development kit, etc.

The worst thing however was that most of the irrelevant traffic came from display network, contributing to a very low CTR and enormous cost per acquisition.

After discussing the issue, we worked out a list of negative phrases that have been successfully used in the campaigns for more than 3 years already. Are you still unsure you need negative keywords? :) Read the rest of this entry »

Infographics: Most Common On Page Risk Factors Showcased

February 17th, 2012 by

What would you do to warm up a cold room? Put a dozen of heaters? Or make sure the isolation is proper first? If the heat loss level is low, one heater will be enough to do the job. In case it's high, the dozen might make the room warmer, but the resources will be lost in vain.

Same is true about achieving high rankings.

What would you do to get a website rank high in Google? Build multiple links? Or check out on page factors first?

On page factors are neglected quite often. Neat design and decent content seem to be enough, and website promoters go chasing the links.

However, that's very similar to the attempts of warming up a poorly-isolated room with dozen heaters. Same goes with SEO, where a smarter approach would be to eliminate risks first so as to get to Google top 10 faster and easier. Read the rest of this entry »

How to build up keyword phrases when your research tools fail

February 10th, 2012 by

Either as a professional SEO or webmaster you might have been stuck in a situation when the available keyword research tools like:

Fail to provide you with any keyword ideas. Typically, it happens due to any of the following reasons or their combination:

  • A new keyword/ object/ notion (e.g., you are promoting an absolutely new product or service)
  • The keyword has very low search volume (the research tools often omit such keywords)
  • Adult or restricted niche (the research tools may, and they actually do, filter out 'adult' related keywords from their results)

There are a few techniques that might help you pick out potentially good keywords despite the lack of information. Read on! Read the rest of this entry »
