Simple explanations of major terms as they are used in Rank Tracker
| Term | Definition |
| Active workspace | A workspace currently selected on the Keywords tab. It determines which columns are visible in your working area as well as their size and order in which they follow. The workspace can also contain data filters to sort out keywords compliant with certain conditions. |
| Agent rotation | A search safety feature enabling Rank Tracker to alternate user agents (browsers) when getting data from search engines. |
| Anti-captcha | A search safety feature letting you bypass captchas. Learn more |
| API Key | Code that authorizes automated access to a web service. Using it in Rank Tracker, you can get a certain amount of data from a search engine or a keyword research database without having to enter captchas or conceal your searching activity. Learn more |
| Bounce rate | The percentage of visitors who left the website after viewing one page (the one they came to). This is no problem if visitors perform the expected action before or after leaving the website (place an order, make a call, request a quote etc.). Otherwise, this might mean your pages are not compelling enough. Learn more |
| Captcha | An image that can appear while you are searching for something in Google, Yahoo! or some other search engine. You should type in the characters you see to continue using the service. Learn more |
| Competition | A keyword efficiency factor showing how many webpages are competing for a keyword. The fewer the number, the easier it can be to reach a top placement. Learn more |
| Competitors | Additional websites/web pages that you can add to a Rank Tracker project. This option lets you conveniently compare rankings of the URLs ranking for the same set of keywords. Learn more |
| Difference (e.g. Google Difference, Bing US Difference) | A value indicating how a site’s position on SERPs has changed as compared to a previous result (e.g. the most recent or the first registered). Learn more |
| Entrance date | The date when a keyword was added to a Rank Tracker project. |
| Expected visits | A keyword efficiency factor showing how much traffic a keyword can bring to a site if the site ranks #1 for this keyword. Learn more |
| Export template | A set of preferences stored in Rank Tracker and used for quick exports of your project data. Learn more |
| Google Analytics | A free web service from Google that offers traffic statistics for websites: number of visitors, sources they come from, pages of the website they look at and so on. Learn more |
| Google Adwords Keyword Tool | A free web service from Google that lets you find new keywords and offers monthly search volume statistics for them. |
| History records | The results of ranking checks saved in Rank Tracker projects for your reference. |
| Human emulation | A search safety feature enabling Rank Tracker to imitate human behavior when getting data from search engines. |
| KEI (Keyword Efficiency Index) | A keyword efficiency factor based on keyword traffic to competition ratio. This factor lets you choose the best keywords for your Internet marketing campaign – those having a sufficient traffic potential and reasonable competition. Learn more |
| Keyword efficiency factors | A group of analytic factors used to measure keyword effectiveness for an SEO campaign (search volume, expected visits, competition, and KEI). Learn more |
| Number of searches (search volume) | A keyword efficiency factor showing the average number of monthly searches for a keyword. The higher the number, the more traffic the keyword can potentially bring to your site. Learn more |
| Preferred search engines | Search engines you want to monitor your site’s presence in (Rank Tracker remembers the choice you initially make and offers it by default any time you check rankings). Learn more |
| Proxy rotation | A search safety feature enabling Rank Tracker to use multiple proxy servers (IP addresses) when getting data from search engines. Learn more |
| Publish | A feature letting you export SEO reports outside of Rank Tracker: save them to your computer, upload them to a website or deliver to customers by email. |
| Publishing profile | A set of preferences stored in Rank Tracker and used for quick report publishing. Learn more |
| Rank (e.g. Google Rank, Yahoo! Rank) | A number (or a combination of numbers) indicating where Internet searchers see your site on SERPs. |
| Reach | A ratio between the number of monthly visits to the number of monthly searches for a keyword. The value shows how extensive your coverage of the targeted audience is. |
| Report template | A set of preferences used to create custom SEO reports. The template determines the structure and design of reports created through it. Learn more |
| Scan depth | The number of search listings Rank Tracker scans when checking rankings (customizable). Learn more |
| Search safety settings | A group of features helping you avoid temporary blocks in search engines. Learn more |
| Scheduler | Functionality that makes it possible to run SEO tasks automatically at any time you specify. Learn more |
| Temporary block | A short-term interruption of searching activity that can happen while you are querying search engines (doesn’t do any harm and can be prevented). Learn more |
| Universal Search | A method used by Google in delivering organic search results. When appropriate, it blends different types of listings on the same page (general web search results, videos, images, places, news etc.). Learn more |
| URL Found (e.g. Yahoo! URL Found) | The web address of a page from your site found in search results for a keyword. |
| Visibility | A value that indicates how visible your website is in search engines for a certain keyword. The higher a site’s visibility, the more likely it’ll be discovered by Internet searchers. Learn more |
| Visits | The number of individual sessions by visitors who came to the website through organic search. The data is for the recent 31-day period. More info |
| Workspace | A data filter that lets you customize groups of statistics visible on the Keywords tab. You can use workspaces available in Rank Tracker by default or create your own. Learn more |
