Having created a links page, I am shown a window with some HTML on the left and some form of tree structure on the right.
What is this tree structure about? Does it do anything? Is it meant to show something?
If there was some decent help included with the program, I wouldn't have to waste time asking and waiting for a reply.

This is a links directory template, and according to this template your links page will be generated. This template consists of HTML code and some service variables (aka meta-tags) -- LinkAssistant will substitute the variables with the appropriate values from the current project properties, and your link partners' properties, when you decide to (re)generate your links pages by clicking the "Generate" button. Here you can customize and fine-tune things ad infinitum, if you like.

Please check our Tutorial
You can also find there a section about Link Pages Generation and Link Pages Variables
Hope this helps. _________________ Search Engine Optimization Software

I'm sorry, but your answer told me nothing at all.
I had already read the pages your links pointed to.
My question was, and I repeat:
"What is this tree structure about? Does it do anything? Is it meant to show something?"
Nothing that I can find anywhere makes any mention of this part of the links template page, yet it is clearly there on my monitor, to the right of the HTML.

Ohhh... Sorry, I didn't understand the question
And here's the answer:
This tree just represents all service variables (meta-tags) LinkAssistant is aware of. You may insert the required variable into your template by double-clicking the necessary node of the tree -- the variable will be inserted into your template right after the current position of you cursor. _________________ Search Engine Optimization Software
