Can 301 hurt PageRank ? (Panic) Sat Aug 04, 2007 2:45 pm

Read somewhere to use a 301 to direct non-www to www so that all backlinks are interpreted by Goog as going to the www version and thus making more backlinks to the www version

However, I just noticed a DRASTIC DROP in pagerank, no lie

It appears that the 301 has INVALIDATED the non-www links

Can 301 redirects hurt pagerank???

Any help MOST appreciated

Scanreg, I really don't know why you got this problem, but I doubt this is due to a 301 redirect you used (unless you did something wrong, which I doubt too.)

To the best of my knowledge, 301 redirect is recommended by Google as a preferred way to move a site.

In my case the PR suffered a drop.

301 redirects can't hurt the pagerank. It actualy increases it, by cumulating the links received to www domain com with those received to domain.com

Many websites had suffered a major Page Rank decrease on this latest update. I think this is due to some changes in Google ranking formula.

I guess that might be a possibility but I cannot confirm. The 301 was the only thing I changed and I still wish I could reverse it.

It's not about what you've changed, it about what Google changed Laughing Google may not tolarate some things any more...who knows.

Did you encounter a ranking drop or just a PR drop?
