Well, I dont think Google does anything ethically or morally wrong in their search services. I think they do a good job of treating websites fairly and communicating with webmasters to help them improve their standings in the rankings - and you seem to forget that it is THEIR website - they can do anything they want with it.

So, I think speculating that there would be some laws against their current practices is unlikely. Not to mention that in 10-20 years the internet will look nothing like it does today - so, you really cant forecast what kind of laws would apply or even be necessary.

If you are frustrated with your rankings, don't blame Google - do something about it.

It seems like you have some love affair with google. Some personal vestment in them. I however see them as the new M$. I think they need to play fairly. That means they need to openly allow us to know how they have rated us. And they need to make their criteria public. It doesn't matter if they change their criteria every day. They just need to make it public. They don't have to rate my website number one. They just have to allow me to know what ranking they assigned to me.

When they open up and start playing fairly I'll stop my comparison of them to M$...

I'm not sure where you get the love affair idea from, I just prefer not to waste time pointing the finger at others. I think Google does play fairly - they treat all websites equally.

And, without divulging all the details of their algorithm to the public (doing so would put them out of business) they do a good job of communicating with webmasters the general techniques that will help them rank better in their search engine. See the google webmaster guidelines, webmaster tools, or just read one of the many googlers' blogs like matt cutts: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/
