Link popularity is an important factor to rank you site higher in Search Result. You can easily count how many site has linked your site. To calculate how many site has linked your site in Google search by simply typing site:http://www.yoursite.com and will show the search result and number of site that has placed your link. You can do the same thing in yahoo or MSN search engines.

As for as I know if you want to calculate how many site has linked your site you should use link:http://www.yoursite.com Using command site:http://www.yoursite.com you may see how many pages of your site is indexed by Google.

Google does not show all your backlinks. For a more acurrate result use Yahoo.

Tell me something is it possible to be de-linked from a directory.The reason I ask is because Google results shows that my back links has decreased,and another confusing thing is that with the current search the results displayed for backlinks in Google decreases once I switch on to the next page.Why is this occurring??

@ Maurice - good post, I agree with you on using Yahoo Site Explorer because the Google "link:" command only shows a small selection of the backlinks Google have actualy acquired for the site your checking, (this is mentioned frequently in their official blog).
And yes like you said, of course Link Assistant, I love SEO SpyGlass.
