Sub Directories to build one way links

Greetings,
Say I have my main website, and I have the intention to create a sub directory with the only intention to build a "links Directory".
As per my readings out there for Search engines a sub directory is a different website.
It is possible to use this technique to obtain one way links?
I mean that the partners links will be added in the sub directory, and maybe my link in their websites linking to my main site.
Thanks

I don't think so that the SE's will consider your sub-directory to be a different website if your domain is the same,i.e if the index or home page is the same. What you could possibly do is to have the link to your directory from your home page and vice versa.Program the robots such a way that they consider your directory link to be an outbound linkfrom your website.Had I been in your place I would prefer

Thread is a little old... but I thought would reply anyway...
As a guide... please note that I would refuse to exchange links with anyone who wanted to put the link on a sub-domain (i.e. subdomains like http://subdomain.somesite.com)
This is unless the sub-domain has it's "own" high page rank / domain rank.
Remember that search engines see a sub-domain (e.g. http://subdomain.somesite.com) as being a totally different domain than "somesite.com" - therefore as per usual, if this is used as a way to trick people into thinking they are getting a link on "somesite.com", then I doubt this will earn you many friends when they realise that it is as useful as a link on "someone-elses-website.com" (not saying it is a trick - but just noting how it could appear to some prospective link partners)
So perhaps becareful of making it appear that you might be being tricky (as is unlikely a new sub-domain will have any page or domain rank of it's own) and choose to use "somesite.com/links/" instead (i.e. a subdirectory).
Hope someone finds comments useful - cheers, Asiaplay

Thats wrong.
Any Subdomain off the top domain is the same thing.
If you create a site off from your main domain like (www.newdomain.yoursite.com)
It will have the same PR that (www.yoursite.com) has.
Whether its a subdomain or a subdirectory doesn't matter.
Search engines see it still as the main Domain period.
So if you make Backlinks to a subdomain your just building up the PR of the main Domain. _________________ All the best,

Hi Shawn,
Not contradicting you here - just trying to learn (as I have not understood this being the case and really maybe there is something I don't know, which I should - so comments would be appreciated).
For example... please see the following 3 domains
(using something like SEOQuake toolbar for firefox.
www.taylormadegolf.com [PR 6]
www.korea.taylormadegolf.com [PR 5]
www.shopping.taylormadegolf.com [PR 4]
So they don't have the same PR - but I guess your meaning is the PR 6 is being shared to the sub-domains as they are linked (as it would if they were linked as sub-folders) - so essentially there is no difference - yes?
However if the sub-domain was not backlinked / linked at all - the PR would remain unshared would it not?
Also is the PR shared any-more than it would be (or less than) if it was a totally new domain being linked?
Thanks in advance for clarification...
Cheers - Asiaplay

Right that exactly what I mean.
"However if the sub-domain was not backlinked / linked at all - the PR would remain unshared would it not?"
Nope it will always be shared.
Because no matter which way you go it's still linked off the main Domain.
"Also is the PR shared any-more than it would be (or less than) if it was a totally new domain being linked?"
It does not matter because the Sub still comes off the main Domain. _________________ All the best,

Thanks for your clarification Shawn... I never realised sub-domains were auto linked like this (i.e. treated the same as folders)... good to know for sure now
Cheers - Asiaplay...
