Is it OK to omit meta tags on web pages?

Even though meta tags aren't treated as a ranking factor by major search engines, it is not the reason to stop using these page elements. Here's why:

  • Meta descriptions are often displayed on SERPs. If a meta description contains the keyword (or a synonym to it), it will be highlighted, which is nice. An engaging text will encourage people to visit your site. This can be crucial for your click through rate.
  • Nicely optimized meta tags can improve your rankings in less popular search engines. This can get you some new visitors at no extra cost.

So please consider adding meta tags (at least to your landing pages) and mention your main keywords there once. Make sure the descriptions are unique, well-written and fit within the limit of 230 characters.
