How to allocate more memory for SEO PowerSuite?

All SEO PowerSuite tools are built using the Java technology.

As you know, Java-based apps can be a bit of a resource hog on your system. That is why in order not to overload your machine resources we set the memory consumption limit for our tools: none of SEO PowerSuite apps can consume more than 700 MB of RAM.

However, if you are running a powerful machine with plenty of memory, you can extend the memory limit and let SEO PowerSuite tools use maximum available resources.

Windows

  • First visit www.java.com site and make sure you install the latest 64-bit Sun Java Environment.
  • Then go to Control Panel - All Control Panel Items - System and choose the 'Advanced System Settings' option (in Windows 10 you may access this setting by right clicking the Start menu and choose the System option)

  • In the 'System properties' menu switch to the 'Advanced' tab and click 'Environment Variables'

  • In the window under 'System Variables' click 'New'.

  • In the field 'Variable Name' enter _JAVA_OPTIONS, in the field 'Variable Value' enter '-Xmx3500m'

Here the value of 3500 stands for the amount of memory you allow for SEO PowerSuite tools to use. So, you can change this value for any other amount depending how powerful your PC is. If you have over 8GB of RAM you are free to set this limit up to 4000Mb or more.

Note: even if you have a powerful machine with plenty of available RAM, it does not mean that system will let you use all the resources. If you set the memory limit too high Java may not be able to start, this would mean that you need to go back to the environment variables settings and reduce the limit.

MacOS

  • To extend the memory limit on MacOS, first download and save the following command files on your desktop (download the files for the respective tools that you have installed into your system):

    WebSite Auditor

    SEO SpyGlass

    LinkAssistant

    Rank Tracker

    BuzzBundle

Next you will have to give permissions for each of the downloaded files. For example, to provide permissions for the Rank Tracker file do the following:

  • Launch the Console and type in the following command and press Enter: sudo chmod +x /Users/<username>/Desktop/ranktracker.command

Note: you should replace <username> with the name of your current system user.

After that go back to your desktop and double click the ranktracker.command file and the software should be launched with the extended memory limit.

You will have to run the same command in the console for every downloaded file, just replace ranktracker.command with the name of the respective file:

  • LinkAssistant:

    sudo chmod +x /Users/<username>/Desktop/linkassistant.command

    WebSite Auditor:

    sudo chmod +x /Users/<username>/Desktop/websiteauditor.command

    SEO SpyGlass:

    sudo chmod +x /Users/<username>/Desktop/spyglass.command

    BuzzBundle:

    sudo chmod +x /Users/<username>/Desktop/buzzbundle.command

Once you apply the commands you will need to start the software by double clicking the command files on your desktop.

LINUX

To increase the memory limit on Linux you need to modify the sh file for every SEO PowerSuite application. Here is the example how to modify the ranktracker.sh file

  • go to the directory Opt/link-assistant.com/ranktracker/bin

  • open the ranktracker.sh file with any text editor, such as Gedit and find the line -Xmx768m \

  • replace the -Xmx768m \ parameter with -Xmx1500m \

Then save the changes.

That is all, now when you start Rank Tracker it will be launched with the extended memory limit. If this is not enough, you may increase the paramter -Xmx1500m \ to -Xmx2000m \ if your system allows.

You will have to change this parameter for every SEO PowerSuite application sh file which are located in the respective folders:

Linkassistant:

Opt/link-assistant.com/linkassistant/bin

WebSite Auditor:

Opt/link-assistant.com/websiteauditor/bin

SEO Spyglass:

Opt/link-assistant.com/seospyglass/bin
