We've been long thinking of social sites as a platform to promote your brand and attract new customers, but after May 22, 2013 it's different: Social Media is the safest way of risk-free, natural link building left for SEOs.

Step 1: Compare Time vs. Signals vs. Traffic
1. Identify social networks where you get the most signals.
Are you getting more likes and shares on Facebook, or Tweets and retweets linking to your site, or maybe you're most loved on Google+ ?
As a rule there is very distinct difference between social sites, and you shouldn't ignore it.
How to check this?
Now you've got a whole-new dashboard in the SEO SpyGlass tool from your SEO PowerSuite toolkit:
Find all the stats under Preferences – Domain ranking factors - Factors overview.

2. Now look at the actual traffic you get from each social network.
We were surprised when we checked this for the first time for our own sites! One of them, for example, got 69% of social signals in Twitter and only 14% in Facebook. Yet the traffic it was getting from Facebook was 8 times bigger than from Twitter!
Make sure SEO SpyGlass is connected to your Google Analytics account – and you'll be able to see the traffic stats in the visits column.
3. Try to note how much time is spent, at least approximately, on each social network.
What if Twitter is a waste of many hours daily?
Compare signals and traffic to the time spent. If you're after links, choose the networks with the best signals count per hour, and put more effort into them. And if you're chasing real traffic from social sites, concentrate on the networks that bring more visits per hour spent.
Use SEO SpyGlass to check how many signals and how much traffic you get from different social networks. And for the time, you can just use your watch :)

Step 2: Monitor how your rankings grow thanks to social links
Don't forget that besides the new social features you've got added to SEO PowerSuite today, your SEO toolkit has many more helpful options to use over your social link building campaign.
1. Check your rankings before starting a social link-building campaign
To measure effect, of course you have to know where you stood earlier.
2. Mark the start of a new social media campaign
Use Rank Tracker's Events feature, and you'll easily see how any important social activity changed your rankings.
Go to Preferences – Events and add a new note to the calendar:
3. Check rankings and see how your campaign helped your rankings and traffic
Make a rank check in Rank Tracker, and look at the progress graph. The Event you've created will be marked there, and you'll clearly see what has changed afterwards. Note: do not expect to see immediate effect, give Google a few days to think.

Step 3: Go back and see where you were right
1. Find the most socially shareable pages on your site
Your own website or blog is full of surprises and hidden treasures! And it's very, extremely, absolutely possible that you have pages that people love and share on social media – and you don't even know about this.
Yes, even if you don't have social sharing buttons on your pages (but please add them at your nearest convenience).
You need WebSite Auditor to run through all your site's pages and find social signals to every page.
Switch to the workspace Popularity in Social Media.
Then sort by Facebook, Twitter or whatever you need, and see which pages are the winners!
2. Do the right thing
First of all, if you did find pages with above-average social signals – open them in your browser, and read every word on them. Then think two things:
These pages are naturally shareable. If you share them a bit more on social sites, forums or blogs (use BuzzBundle for that), user-generated shares will mushroom again.
These pages are not your last masterpiece. Set to create pages with similar content or offers – and see more social links growing for your site.
You can see a quite different picture though. Very few or no social signals to your pages. Yes, this has happened to every one of us, and you can help your site here:
Create a cross-site widget with social sharing buttons. You don't know yet which of your pages are shareable. So just experiment first, and then make a check with WebSite Auditor in a few weeks or months (depending on your traffic). Even if you don't want to put in too much effort in adding the buttons, there're hundreds of plug-ins for any kind of site or blog that are easy to use.
Add more distinct social buttons and a few words inviting your users to share on every new page that you want to get shared a lot. Look, we're doing this right now!!!

1. Brainstorm and Create and Measure
Just think what people may like, and do this. Here's a list of link bait techniques that may work for you. And don't forget to add social buttons! (wink, wink)
Measure results using the methods described on this page earlier. Make conclusions and start again.
2. Learn from successful campaigns in your niche
Some people were born with a special SMM or viral marketing wit, but most of us just learn.
There's no universal formula, so if you want to create really powerful campaigns and viral content that will be shared in Social Media a lot – you'll have to see what's popular in your particular niche.
When you're reading niche blogs you usually see posts that got the most likes, shares, tweets and +1's.

Run a search by your niche keywords:
Check social signals of the pages you found, sort by Page's Facebook popularity or Page's Twitter mentions and find pages that really stand out. Now check what kind of content triggered all those likes, shares, tweets and +1s' and think whether you can create something similar on your own site.
3. Help your page become viral
It may fire up a viral bomb of shares and tweets, but most likely your page will need a push, and you have to get a few hundred visitors to see it, to get the ball rolling.
