Rank Tracker keyword research tool and rankings checker
There's an interesting setting in Rank Tracker called Rank Checking Precision. It can help you save resources of your computer and become more search engine friendly.
To find it, go to Preferences -> Rank Checking Precision...
The first section you see is Maximum number of results to check.
By default, you've got it set to 100. That's an ideal setting when you don't know where you are ranking yet. It lets you find important rankings without bumping search engines with queries too much.
You can increase it — in this case Rank Tracker will be finding your pages even if you're not ranking in the first 100 for some words. But obviously it will take longer to work at one project and your software will be checking more results and sending more queries to Google. Therefore you may also need extra safety settings, so that Google doesn't notice your search and doesn't interrupt it. You'll find these settings and turn them on in Preferences -> Search Safety Settings...
Note: it is possible to increase the number of results checked up to 1,000, because search engines are unable to show more results.
But look — in Maximum number of results to check you can also decrease this number — and that's the real time-saver!
For example, if we have a sports shoes website and a list of related keywords, we may decide that we don't care about results that fall behind Google's page 3. In this case, we set Maximum number of results to check to 30 and spend three times as little time and resources as before.
Note: it is possible to decrease the number of results checked down to 10, because search engines normally show 10 results on their first page.
Now let's look at the second section in Preferences -> Rank Checking Precision... This one is trickier but it's really worth it! Let's see what the Rank Checking Method is.
You've got three options in the dropdown: Successive Search, Last Found Position and 100 Results Per Page. Here's what each one means.
1. Successive Search
That's Rank Tracker's default setting. Your ranking checker goes to Page 1 in Google and looks for your website. If nothing's found within the first 10 results shown on page 1 it goes to Page 2 and checks the nex ten. If there's still no result it will check then Page 3 etc. So if you're ranking #98 for some keyword, the software will look through 10 results pages before it finds you. If you are checking your rankings for the first time this is the best way to search.
2. Last Found Position
If you have already checked your rankings at least once, the software remembers where it found you last time. If you choose the Last Found Position option here before your next check, Rank Tracker will go to the old spot first. Only if it doesn't find you on the same page as before, it'll go to look at other pages. This will save you lots of time when you re-check your rankings.
3. 100 Results Per Page
Normally when people search in Google they view 10 results per page. But sometimes they use Google's advanced settings to look at 100 results per page. Rank Tracker can do the same and search in a 100-Results-Per-Page mode — this saves time and seems less disturbing to Google because your rank checking tool switches less often from one page to another. However we keep in mind that Google may show slightly different results in a 100-Per-Page mode.
For example, when we looked up in Google for SEO software, in the 10-results-per-page mode we saw our website ranking #1. But in the 100-results-per-page mode, web had two pages ranking as #1 and #2.
Therefore, after Rank Tracker finds you in the 100-results-per-page mode, it will switch automatically to its normal 10-per-page mode and will re-check the results to make them 100% precise.
So as you can see this setting is perfect for quick and resource-saving checks, especially when you have a huge list of keywords in your project.
WebSite Auditor content optimization tool
Here's how you can make sure that your website content is better optimized for your keywords than for some occasional words. WebSite Auditor analyzes your page's content from the point of view of search engines, and it can give you a picture of what words on your page seem important to search engines.
To see this, create a project for your website www.yourwebsite.com, switch to the Report tab and find the combo box for report templates in the right corner.
Choose the template Keyword Statistics Report in the dropdown.
Now let's go to see what we'll find in the report.
Let's look at an example. We took one website that sells sport shoes. This is one of the keywords we want to rank high for with this site.
In WebSite Auditor we get a clear picture of how Google sees all words on the homepage:
This cloudmap tells us a lot of useful things.
Look at our critical keywords sport shoes (marked red). The word sport is very important for this website and will bring targeted visitors to our website. But it is pretty small in the cloudmap. Our word sport seems to Google far less important than the word products (marked blue) or the word events (marked blue).
So here is conclusion #1: We should do more optimization for the word sport. And we should cut down the use of pretty irrelevant words products, events, contact and other words we marked blue in the image above.
Now let's see the words marked yellow: athletic and racing. They are related to the products we're trying to sell, and could build pretty profitable key phrases: athletic shoes and racing shoes.
Conclusion #2: It turns out that our homepage is already well-optimized for the words athletic and racing. We should do some link building now, and very soon we'll be ranking in top 10 for these good keywords and will get some good targeted traffic.
Hope now you see how even a simple cloudmap helps make the necessary corrections to your optimization strategy and ensure that your website content is better optimized for your effective keywords than for some occasional words.
