Google AI Overviews Tracker – Now in SEO PowerSuite

Google’s AI Overviews (AIOs) are rewriting the rules of search. Instead of browsing the classic “10 blue links,” users now get instant, AI-generated answers pulled from multiple sources at the very top of the page.

For SEOs, this shift creates two major challenges:

  • Ranking #1 organically no longer guarantees visibility.
  • Competitors can surface in AIOs even if they don’t rank in the top results.

The problem? Until now, there was no way to track this in SEO PowerSuite.

We’ve fixed that.

Update SEO PowerSuite now
to unlock the new AIO Tracking feature

With the latest update, Rank Tracker now comes with Google AIO Tracking. This brand-new feature lets you:

  • See which of your keywords trigger AI Overviews.
  • Check whether your site is included.
  • Track changes in AIO visibility over time.
  • Analyze competitor presence inside the AI box.

In this guide, we’ll show you how the feature works, how to enable it, and how to use AIO data to refine your keyword research, rank tracking, and competitor analysis.

How to enable Google AIO insights in Rank Tracker

Turning on AIO tracking is quick and takes just a couple of clicks.

  1. Open your project in Rank Tracker.
  2. Right-click on any table header in your workspace or the "Edit visible columns" button.
  3. From the drop-down list, select Google AIO.

AIO Mentions and AIO Rank icons appear whenever a keyword triggers Google’s AI Overview.

If your website is included in those results, the icons will light up in green. If your site isn’t there, the icons will remain grey.

What’s the difference between AIO Mentions and AIO Rank?

AIO Mentions appears when your website is explicitly mentioned and linked within the AI Overview’s answer text. AIO Rank indicates your website is included among the sources the AI Overview cites (e.g., in the source carousel), even if it isn’t named in the answer itself.

You can also spot AI Overview appearances in the Google SERP Features column.

And if you open the SERP Details dashboard, you’ll see the full list of domains included in the AI box for that keyword.

This setup gives you a complete snapshot: not just whether AIOs exist for your keywords, but also whether your brand is visible inside them.

AIO tracking in rank monitoring

The biggest advantage of AIO tracking is that you can now monitor your visibility in AI Overviews over time, just like you do with organic rankings.

Track inclusion day by day

Rank Tracker records whether your domain is included in AI Overviews for every keyword in your project. By checking your reports daily or weekly, you’ll see patterns emerge — for example, which queries consistently trigger AIOs, and whether your site is showing up in them regularly.

To enable this feature, make you’re recording SERP data – go to Rank Tracking > Tracked Keywords and click Record SERP data in SERP Details.

Compare results across dates

SEO is never static. Google is constantly adjusting which sources it cites in AI results. With AIO tracking, you can select two dates and instantly see if your inclusion has grown or dropped. This is especially helpful after Google updates, when shifts in AIO visibility may explain sudden traffic changes.

Detect visibility drops early

Without AIO data, it’s hard to know why organic clicks might dip even when your rankings stay stable. Now you can pinpoint whether a drop is linked to AI Overviews — for example, if Google started showing an AI box for a keyword and your domain wasn’t included.

Spot competitor gains

Since you can view all domains appearing in the AI Overview for each keyword, it’s easy to benchmark your progress. If competitors suddenly start showing up in AIOs while you don’t, you’ll know it’s time to adjust your content strategy.

In practice, this module helps you connect the dots: instead of guessing why rankings and traffic don’t always align, you can see exactly how AI Overviews are influencing visibility.

AIO insights for keyword research

AI Overview tracking isn’t limited to rank monitoring — it also gives you new ways to approach keyword research. With Rank Tracker, you can now see which queries bring visibility in AIOs, both for your site and for competitors.

Ranking Keywords report

In the Keyword Research module, open the Ranking Keywords feature. Enter any target domain and switch the drop-down filter from organic to AIO Rank.

Download Rank Tracker

This shows you a list of keywords where that domain is included in Google’s AI Overviews. Run it on your own site to discover the exact queries already giving you visibility in AI results.

Keyword Gap analysis

The same workflow applies to the Keyword Gap feature. First, add multiple competitor domains. Then, instead of organic keywords, switch the view to AIO Rank, and choose "Competitor keywords" (any competitor, but not your site).

This reveals two things:

  • Which AIO-triggering queries your competitors are already included in.
  • Where your site is missing out on AI visibility.

Turning insights into opportunities

By identifying gaps between you and your competitors, you can build a content plan aimed specifically at winning inclusion in AI Overviews. These are often long-tail queries, question-based searches, or informational topics where AI is most active.

Example: If two of your competitors appear in AIOs for “best gravel bikes 2025” but your site doesn’t, that’s a signal to create or optimize content that answers that query in depth.

In short, keyword research powered by AIO insights lets you move beyond search volume and rankings. It shows you where Google’s AI is shaping visibility — and how to claim your share of that space.

Competitor analysis with AIO data

AI Overviews have introduced a new competitive layer to SEO. Even if you’re outperforming rivals in organic rankings, they may still be getting visibility through AIO mentions — and that can shift traffic and brand awareness in their favor.

With Rank Tracker’s AIO Tracking, you can see exactly where competitors stand in AI results.

Benchmark multiple domains

First, add several competitor domains to your project, then go to SERP Details > SERP History. You’ll instantly see which of your tracked keywords trigger AI Overviews, and whether competitors are included while you’re not.

Run AIO Keyword Gap reports

Use the Keyword Gap tool to compare your domain against two or more rivals. Switch the filter to AIO Rank. The report will show you the list of queries where:

  • Competitors appear in AI Overviews, but your site doesn’t.
  • Both you and competitors are included (so you’re on equal ground).
  • No one in your niche is included yet — untapped opportunities.

Reveal competitor strengths

This kind of analysis highlights not just keywords, but competitor strategy. If a rival consistently appears in AIOs for buyer-intent queries like “best SaaS reporting software,” it suggests their content is optimized in ways Google’s AI finds credible and useful.

Turn gaps into strategy

Once you’ve identified where competitors win and you don’t, the next step is clear: build or improve content around those queries. Over time, this lets you reclaim lost ground and expand into AI-driven search opportunities.

In short, AIO competitor analysis gives you a real-world advantage: you can see who’s winning visibility in the AI box, why, and how to counter it with your own strategy.

Why AIO tracking matters for your SEO strategy

AI Overviews aren’t just another SERP feature — they’re a new visibility layer that can make or break your traffic. If your content is included, you gain exposure at the very top of Google results. If it’s not, you risk losing clicks even if your organic rankings stay the same.

That’s why AIO tracking is so important. It gives you the missing piece of the puzzle: visibility data that explains traffic shifts and shows where your competitors are winning.

Rethinking success metrics

In the past, SEO success was measured by keyword rankings and organic traffic. Today, that’s not enough. You also need to measure whether your content appears in AI Overviews — because that’s where many users stop their journey.

Shaping your content strategy

Knowing which keywords trigger AIOs helps you decide where to double down. If your site is absent from high-value AI queries, it’s a signal to create or optimize content for those topics.

Understanding competitors’ moves

AIO tracking shows you the domains that Google’s AI considers credible sources. If your competitors are consistently included, that’s a sign of their authority in your niche — and an opportunity for you to strengthen your own E-E-A-T signals.

Preparing for the future of search

AI-powered search isn’t going away. If anything, it will become more prominent. By tracking AIOs today, you’re building the workflows and strategies that will give you an edge as AI continues to reshape SEO.

In short: without AIO data, you’re operating in the dark. With it, you can finally connect rankings, traffic, and visibility into one clear picture — and use that insight to grow.

Practical tips to improve your AIO presence

Tracking AI Overviews is only half the job. The next step is improving your chances of being included. While Google doesn’t publish a rulebook for AIOs, early testing and industry studies highlight several patterns that can guide your strategy.

1. Write clear, snippet-ready answers

AI systems favor concise, structured explanations. Add short answer-style paragraphs (40–60 words) that directly respond to a query. These are more likely to be pulled into AI summaries.

2. Strengthen topical authority

Don’t just target a keyword — build full topic clusters. Cover related questions, subtopics, and supporting content. This signals depth, which increases your credibility in Google’s AI selection process.

To ease the process, you can use tools like RankDots that help in building topical authority at scale.

3. Highlight expertise and trust

Show that your content is written by real experts. Use author bios, link to credible sources, and demonstrate first-hand experience. E-E-A-T isn’t just for traditional rankings — it also matters in AI inclusion.

4. Add structured data

Schema markup helps Google understand your content contextually. FAQs, HowTo, Product, and Article schema all make it easier for AI to interpret your pages.

5. Update content regularly

AI tends to prefer fresh, reliable information. Regularly update stats, examples, and references in your content to maintain its relevance.

6. Use FAQs and Q&A formats

Since AI Overviews often answer questions, publishing FAQ sections gives Google ready-made material to cite.

Use cases: How SEOs can apply AIO tracking

The release of AIO Tracking isn’t just about adding new columns to Rank Tracker — it’s about changing how you approach SEO strategy. Here are a few real-world scenarios where this feature makes a difference.

1. Explaining traffic drops

Your rankings haven’t changed, but organic clicks are down. Using the new feature, you notice that several high-traffic keywords now trigger AI Overviews where your site isn’t included. That explains the gap — and shows you exactly what to optimize for.

2. Finding content gaps

You run a Keyword Gap report against two main competitors. The AIO Rank filter reveals dozens of queries where both competitors are cited in AI Overviews but your site isn’t. That becomes your content roadmap for the next quarter.

3. Reporting on brand visibility

As an agency, you can now show clients not just where they rank organically, but also where they appear in Google’s AI results. Including “AI Overview visibility” in monthly reports demonstrates cutting-edge tracking that few competitors provide.

4. Spotting quick-win opportunities

In Keyword Research, you notice that your site is already included in AIOs for some long-tail queries — even without top organic rankings. Doubling down on those keywords with stronger content and internal linking helps you secure more clicks.

5. Tracking competitors’ momentum

You open the SERP Details dashboard and see a new competitor frequently cited in AI boxes. That insight tells you where market dynamics are shifting — and where you need to counter their strategy.

AIO Tracking opens the door to strategies that simply weren’t possible before. Instead of guessing how AI Overviews affect your site, you can measure, compare, and act on the data.

Conclusion: Your AIO visibility is now trackable

AI Overviews are no longer an experiment — they’re part of the search landscape, and they’re reshaping how visibility works. For SEOs, ignoring them means missing out on a growing share of attention at the very top of Google results.

With the new Google AIO Tracking feature in Rank Tracker, you no longer have to guess. You can:

  • See which of your keywords trigger AI Overviews.
  • Check whether your site is included.
  • Compare your presence against competitors.
  • Track changes in visibility over time.

This data finally connects the dots between rankings, traffic, and AI-driven results. It helps you understand where you’re winning, where you’re losing, and where the next opportunities lie.

The future of search will only get more AI-driven. The best way to stay ahead is to track it today.
