Penguin 2.1 quick facts and digest

| Posted in category Google Search Engine Optimization Search Engines Search News

Google Penguin

It all started October 4, when Matt Cutts announced the release of Penguin 2.1 (it should be Penguin 5, if to count the announced releases from the beginning, but Google has chosen this name to stress the importance of Penguin 4 aka Penguin 2.0).

For the newbies: Google Penguin is a name for a Google algorithm update. It is aimed at decreasing search engine rankings of websites that violate Google's Webmaster Guidelines by using so-called black-hat SEO techniques, e.g. manipulating the number of links pointing to the page.

The Penguin update that was first announced on April 24, 2012, and there have been 5 updates total.

3 facts you should know about Penguin 2.1

  • It is supposed to affect around 1% of queries
  • If your website is affected by Penguin, you will notice a significant drop of traffic starting from 4-5 October
  • Google hasn't released a separate blog post on this update, and Matt tweeted a link that explains what Penguin is in general. Thus, it is an update of the algorithm, not a new algo, and the recommendations are the same as for the previous Penguin updates (see our Penguin guide here if you experience any issues with your website and suspect it was penalized by Penguin)

Don't mix up Hummingbird and Penguin 2.1

We received some questions about how to recover from Hummingbird.

Hummingbird is not a penalty-based update. It is a change in how the search engine understands the true meaning of the query. Penguin is an update for fighting with webspam.
