Three, two, one… Launch!
Our Server-Side Keyword Analysis Database just went live in Rank Tracker.
Search volumes & competition stats are now delivered instantly, without connecting to Google Ads or any other data sources.
Remember the day you first saw ranges instead of exact search volumes in Google Ads? 1K-10K, 10K-100K...
My first thought was: They must be kidding!
The second: Where on earth could SEOs find a reliable substitute for the missing data?
Sure, we quickly came up with a workaround — checking keyword stats via the Google Ads forecasting tool. But you obviously needed a faster, more reliable and more autonomous solution. So we started building. Testing, failing, and starting again from scratch. To finally say it out loud — our own Keyword Analysis Database just went live in Rank Tracker.
It keeps the freshest record of # of Searches and Competition stats from Google Ads, ready for immediate delivery whenever you need them.
So, what's in it for you?
Ok, sounds cool. But what exactly does this update mean to Rank Tracker users?
Here are the most important things for you to know:
From now on, you no longer need to connect Google Ads or any other data sources to get the analytical data you need. By default, all keyword data is fetched from our database.
No more meaningless ranges — you get the exact number of searches. Moreover, search volumes of the close keyword variations often grouped together in Google Ads (like plural/singular nouns) are un-grouped.
Relying on stale keyword data in SEO planning is too much of a risk. So we made sure the database is fully updated every 14 days, which means you can always tap into the most current search data.
Need to update search volumes for 100,000 keywords at a time? Rank Tracker can do that in under 5 minutes (and I personally don't know of any other tool able to do the same).
Whenever needed, you can switch back to receiving data from your Google Ads account directly. Or connect additional data sources, like Google Search Console (for Impressions, Click and CTR) and Google Analytics (for organic traffic stats).
Just as usual, you can specify any regional targeting. Search volumes and competition data are available for any country and language. Need to find & analyze keywords in Spanish for the USA market? Well, that's a snap.
Exact search volumes from Google Ads, without Google Ads.
Why launch a new database when there are easier ways to go about it?
Probably, we could have picked one of the third party providers who re-sell Google Ads databases. But those are often kept without updating for months.
Or possibly, we could have mixed Google's ranges with some clickstream data to make a more educated guess about the exact search volumes. But a guess is still a guess (and that's why search volumes are usually different in every other SEO tool you launch).
In short, we never wanted to trade time against your results' accuracy and took a longer pass — to deploy the infrastructure needed to maintain the constantly updated database of 1,1 billion keywords. This data comes from Google Ads forecasting tool directly, without any modifications.
How to plug in the new data source?
To access the new functionality, launch your Rank Tracker and let the tool auto-update or download the freshest version from the website.
Access to the database is available for Professional and Enterprise license users.
Note that if you've already had your Google Ads account connected, your settings remain as is. And you might want to go and change them in Preferences -> SEO/PPC Data:
Here's where the fun begins!:)
If you've been following our news, you might have noticed — it's not the first time I'm talking something "server-side".
A huge update of our server-side backlink index went live in November, immediately followed by a server-side solution for settings synchronization in December. And by March we were able to launch the server-side database of all SEO keywords any site ranks for.
Truth be told, for the past year our main focus has been on data. And piece by piece, we've been gathering it on our servers.
Well, now it's time to bring it to the surface. And here are just a few of our most immediate plans to bring the data to use within the software:
1. Keyword Gap tool (early June)
With this update in just a couple of weeks from now, you will not only be able to see which keywords you and your competitors rank for, but which of competitor keywords you currently miss out on. Is there a better way to find keyword gems for your SEO campaigns?
2. Website Competitors (late June)
Your main business rivals are not necessarily your SEO competitors. When it comes to SEO, you need to keep an eye on the websites that frequently compete with you on Google. And the new module will let you do just that. Or simply find the websites whose organic positions overlap the most.
3. Topic Competitors (mid-July)
This feature is the absolute favorite not only on our SEO team but in marketing as well.
All you have to do is feed the tool with a few keywords you're interested in to:
- See which pages rank for most of these queries (to be able to analyze the best-performing content within the whole topic, as opposed to looking at some individual queries)
- See how much relevant organic traffic the pages enjoy (and that's a killer for picking the right places for advertising)
4. Organic rankings for each website page/backlink
Next (also this summer, but without the ETA for now), you will see organic rankings data integrated into WebSite Auditor and SEO SpyGlass.
Which means you will:
- Know for sure which pages in your website structure already enjoy organic traffic.
- Be able to judge a site's backlinks not only by their link juice value but by real traffic potential.
And there is more to come!
